Pauley wants to take Lehrer shopping

New York Magazine's Intelligencer caught a funny fashion comment from Jane Pauley at the Children's Health Fund gala last week:

Jane Pauley may not watch Katie Couric, but "I love the fact that she gets an anchor chair. ... I'm watching The NewsHour," she says. "But Jim Lehrer - really, I would like to buy him some new ties."
This compilation of pics is a great example, especially the one on the far left. (What are those, hibiscus flowers?) To read the entire piece, click here...

Take a cue, Laura

I just read on DC Style's blog that Laura Bush's chief of staff, Anita McBride, buys her shoes at Little Shoebox in Bethesda. Why doesn't the first lady take a cue? (See below)

Speaking of bad pantsuits and scarves...

Maybe it's living in the White House that does it to you, but Laura's taking a bad fashion cue from Hillary: bad pantsuits with even worse scarves (see below). As President Bush and the first lady waved goodbye to their home this morning for trip to Europe, Laura was sporting a terribly old-fashioned yellow and blue floral scarf, a boxy military-style pantsuit and flat sneaker-esque shoes with white trouser socks. Now I may take back my bad-suit statement if I can find a picture that shows a frontal view, but from the side and rear (there are two oddly placed buttons on her back), this is just a case of trying too hard to make a simple suit look good. (I've never actually seen a wrap suit jacket.) The only excuse I can come up with is that maybe it's because they're on their way to the Czech Republic and Poland, not the fashion capitols of Europe, and she wants to fit in?

Yet another black pantsuit mishap

I agree with the puzzled look on your face, Hillary ... what is it you're wearing? The Dem presidential hopeful looks to be wearing the same boring black pantsuit she wore last night (and a hundred times previous to that) as she speaks during a town hall conversation in New York this morning hosted by Women for Hillary. Maybe she flew back from New Hampshire and had to go immediately there, but trying to spice up this blah staple with a scarf that looks like it's choking you and a brooch that's practically on your shoulder doesn't pull the look together. Hillary, please stop making America look bad.

Fenty runs for a cure, store promotion

Mayor Fenty is often seen jogging the streets of D.C. and this weekend was no different. The long-time runner and health promoter (one of the few things he and his predecessor have in common) ran the National Race for the Cure 5K in the early a.m. of Saturday, and he did it in just over 19 minutes. And the reason this tidbit is making the blog? Fenty ran the race sporting a not-so-attractive running jersey sprawled with the name of his parents’ Adams Morgan fitness-wares store, Fleet Feet.

Fenty was just one of more than 45,000 participants of the 3.2-mile race/walk, which raised nearly $4 million. Also there was Rep. Jim Moran and CBS news anchor Katie Couric, among others.

Elizabeth jokes about John's hair habits

Dem wife Elizabeth Edwards was amazingly witty and quick-on-her-feet (while being quite fashionable, I may add) this weekend as she appeared as a celebrity guest on NPR’s quiz show, “Wait, Wait, Don’t Tell Me!,” Saturday morning (FYI: it was taped in advance).

Going up against host Peter Sagal on the “Not My Job” segment, Edwards holds her own on a game called, "You're Rich, Famous, and Hoovering the Entire Output of the Cali Cartel Up Your Surgically Altered Nose" - basically three questions about treatment centers for celebrities.

But before she answered, she joked about her husband’s controversial $400 haircut saying, "Since he makes mistakes like the haircut, I don't have to worry about humanizing my husband. ... He doesn't use any hair products at all. He doesn't even use conditioner."

Here's my favorite part from the transcript:

SAGAL: All right. First we take you to the famous Promises Center in Malibu where Lindsay Lohan will be heading soon to pay $49,000 a month to sober up. Among the things –-

EDWARDS: That haircut's looking cheap.

I threw in my favorite photo of the couple on their wedding day so you can see how his hair has evolved, or really just stayed the same. To hear audio of the entire segment, click here...

'White Christian male media elites' like the Nats

I'm just not as mean as Wonkette, and even sometimes feel bad reposting some of their content, but here is a funny pic and a not-so-funny cap of Tim Russert and Co. at Tuesday night's Nats game. (And they spelled baseball wrong, not me.)

White Christian male media elites sure do love that baesball. Too bad their sporty clothes don’t like them as James Carville’s skinny ass can make a t-shirt look like a poncho, and Tim Russert needs at least an hour in the make-up chair before he stops scaring small children. Oldest fart of them all Mort Kondracke was at the game too.

(the original reader comment)
Finally got some good Nats tickets last Tuesday [5/29] and found myself seated mere feet from James Carville, super skinny and looking like he just bic’d his dome in khakis and a red t-shirt, and Tim Russert, with his giant head and matching gut. Mort Kondracke was there too, with his wife and still in a suit. Not sitting with James and Tim.

Jenna's Elmo-red dress = knit sack

The Sesame Workshop Fifth Annual Benefit Dinner, in which the first lady was being honored Wednesday evening, seemed to be a fashion disaster for the Bush gals.

Jenna, my dear, I love the idea of trapeze-style dresses, but there is a time and place for them - and this one just looks terrible on you! Did you manage to get yourself pregnant? You have no boobs and a 40-inch waist. Not to mention that your bra strap is showing for all the world to see.

Laura, the suit is actually quite lovely, can't complain too much, and I like the necklace. But did you just have work done? Why are you wearing a gallon of foundation that was meant for someone paler than paper? The eye brows are over-arching. The lip stick is too thin and too dark of a shade. And your hair is a terrible muddy color. Get a new stylist!

Last but not least, Barbara. It's just the same dress you always wear - too modest and too blah. Spice it up a bit. Even your namesake was known for her blue suits. You can't tell in this photo, but I do have to say that in some of the others, your highlights are fantastic.

It's so sad, Elmo is the best dressed out of the bunch!

A few steps back for pregnant O'Donnell

Though MSNBC’s (and former Roll Caller) Norah O’Donnell and her hottie chef husband, Geoff Tracy, welcomed their twins, Grace and Henry, into the world two weeks ago, you can catch a glimpse of the very pregnant Washingtonian on the cover of the new Pregnancy magazine, which hits newsstands Tuesday.

I do have to say, though, that this dress would not have been my first (or 100th) choice for the bubbly brunette. The ruffles on the arms and edging, teamed with the thin material, make the wrap come off a bit cheap. She also looks like she has a big derriere in this pic, and we all know she doesn't, even while pregnant - it's just the stance. I do like the color and it goes well with her makeup and blue eyes, though not with her gold accessories. And her hair leaves me a tad flat.

Shoes Fit D.C.’s Power Women

I just love it when two men try to make sense out of women's shoe-shopping habits. Patrick and Jeff did just that today in Yeas & Nays, talking about the high-power event Wednesday afternoon at the Willard Hotel to celebrate the opening of the Bethesda location of the Little Shoebox, a Baltimore luxe shoe store.

What could bring together several of Washington’s VIP women on a weekday afternoon? Shoes, of course. ...

Their mission? To check out the new lines and offer their opinions on styles and brands. Taking up the store on its offer: Assistant EPA Administrator Lynn Buhl; Lindi Harvey, a top aide to Sen. Elizabeth Dole; Janine Czarnecki and Karen Czarnecki from the Department of Labor; and Adrienne Taylor from Deloitte and Touche.

Emilie Blaze, the store’s co-owner, said, “We wanted this branding session to introduce ourselves to these elite women of power. We recognize that the topography is different in D.C., and we want to accommodate these women, and our designers want to accommodate them as well.”
